Do you believe that you can benefit from watching Japanese anime to help in learning Japanese?

I am an anime fan and I watch episodes pretty much daily. I am learning Japanese next year (obviously as a beginner) and I was wondering if you thought that it might be easier (or simpler as I would be used to listening to the language) for me to learn Japanese. So what do you reckon?Do you believe that you can benefit from watching Japanese anime to help in learning Japanese?
If you think Japanese is just a school subject, maybe No. I believe there must be some other way that's better for you to get good grade in Japanese class.

However, if you want to improve yuor skill in listening REAL Japanese, want to understand ACTUAL Japanese conversations, then Yes.

Oh, but I'm not talking about Dragonball or Naruto or Bleach or whatever, something along those lines, okay? I'm talking about the shows based on more real-life situations, like school life or daily life.

I'm native Japanese speaker and have been waching tons of amines and am telling you what I really think. As far as they're not way too cartoony, airy-fairy, or unrealistic, their dialogues are far more natural than ones that you might see in the textbook. In reality, Japanese kids also learn words and phrases thruoght anime, watch same episode over and over, again and again! Five-year-old ones pick up words and repeat them hundreds times (It seems like endless time). Eeight-year-old ones pick up favorite lines and memorize them. Of course I did it too :) Think about it -- you can chose your best teachers if you use anime. Pick your favorite characters, your favorite voice actors/actresses. He/she repeat the phrases you want to learn as much as you want. They repeat the lines without complaining whenever you want. Isn't it cool? I don't think human teachers would do such thing... Just you're not an eight year so pick decent phrases up.

Nevertheless, I think it would be better to stick with your textbook if you don't need to learn real Japanese. So, I'd say it depends. Maybe helps, maybe not.

Anyway, good luck!
Speaking as an anime fan that took an intro Japanese course very recently - you pick up the language much faster. Not only do you understand some words from watching so many fansubs, but you understand some of the culture behind the expressions, and the pronunciation is already in your head from hearing so much Japanese.Do you believe that you can benefit from watching Japanese anime to help in learning Japanese?
I watch quite a lot of anime, and i take lessons in Japanese.

It doesnt help loads, but being around the sounds and their sort of structure, like they seem to use sets of sounds in 2 or 3 letters. (suck at explaining sorry)

Basically, yes it will help, but dont expect to be brilliant at the language when you start.
I don't think so. From experience, learning another language strictly depends on the teacher. If they're not a good teacher, you won't learn much, and if you find a good teacher, they're irreplaceable. I suppose it all depends on your desire to learn.Do you believe that you can benefit from watching Japanese anime to help in learning Japanese?
Ya, it may help with the pronunciation I suppose.
It will introduce you to the spoken language very well, but it's dialogue used in non-real-life situations, so for vocabulary and stuff, it might not be so good. The majority of it is slang based, too. But it will warm you into the japanese language and probably will benefit in one way or another.
Yeah sure-I love anime.
I used to be a big anime fan, and am currently taking my fourth year of college-level Japanese.

I believe it can help, definitely. Like stated before, you'd probably see a lot of strange phrases in anime that you wouldn't use in real life (depending on what you watch), so that's something to look out for. Also, there are a lot of characters who speak in ways that are supposed to be cute or amusing, and if you speak that way in everyday situations, you'd frankly sound like an idiot.

HOWEVER. It can help a lot with pronunciation, intonation, and things like that. I also was able to pick up on some cultural facts and aspects that helped me understand Japan better.

If you're still watching anime when you learn, I'd recommend you start listening more for understanding; for instance, try to pick out words you know, and if a word comes up a lot that you don't know, go look it up. Then try to note the way they word sentences -- this is important since the word order is so different than English's. As you get better, you should get more confident, and maybe you could start watching anime without the subtitles and see how much you understand. You mightn't catch everything, but this kind of exposure should up you learn to catch more.

Personally, I've reached a "hill" in my language study. The first year of Japanese was a breeze for me, I've reached a level where I've got to work as hard (or harder) than everyone else. The prior (anime) exposure helped at first, but its impact has definitely faded.

In short, if you remember you're watching a cartoon, which isn't a 100% accurate reflection of the language and culture, it should help. Particularly since anime is something that you probably enjoy, it should motivate you and be a nice supplement to your formal Japanese language study.
Yes, just like the multiple posters above [or below] me have said. It is the best way to pick up words. Also reading light novels [translated but with its original honorifics and wording] After awhile of listening to anime song lyrics- and getting into JROCK bands- I got to pick up words, phrases and even began to understand simple terms, and a whole sentence in japanese when watching a new anime series.

But if you plan on advancing in word pick up- try watching some life actions- where they won't put simple 8th grade reading level subtitles.

Also Rosetta stone is out there...
This is excellent to improve your japanese

try it,

regards,
I've learned german so why wouldn't it work with japanese XD
I've seen many animes and also have been to Japan twice for extended stays. Watching anime is only beneficial as long as the person that subbed it was good at it. There are many fan subbing companies that employee people who know Japanese by home schooling and not through a credited course. But hearing the Japanese words from native speakers does help in you picking up the language faster. Also with hearing a native speaker talk you train your ears to pick up the enunciations better. Japanese is a rather fast paced language much like Latin based languages. But to fully understand the language you need to be taught by a professional, or buy software that was created by professionals, I know from experience Rosetta Stone software is very effective, pricey but very effective.

Far as culture goes anime does increase your knowledge of foreign cultures but does very little at increasing your knowledge as of why that is important to their culture. To understand completely you will need to go back and read Japans history. From my two stays I have accumulated only seven months there and there is still much I don't know, I do suggest anyone that is slightly into Japans culture to visit the country, it's a wonderful and unforgettable experience.
not really

i lived in japan for 2 years and whenever i tryed to watch t.v.

or anime i just got mad that i didnt get it

the best way to learn it is to speck to a native or someone who specks it really well and try to use the stuff you know

the only shows that really helped me were english-teaching programs

because they usually translate it into english

hope that helps!
