Can you comment on the lords pray , what does it mean , what does it mean to you?

The Lords pray

Matthew 6:9-15,,,,,,9"This, then, is how you should pray:

" 'Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

10your kingdom come,

your will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

11Give us today our daily bread.

12Forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one]' 14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Commentary

6:9-15 Christ saw it needful to show his disciples what must commonly be the matter and method of their prayer. Not that we are tied up to the use of this only, or of this always; yet, without doubt, it is very good to use it. It has much in a little; and it is used acceptably no further than it is used with understanding, and without being needlessly repeated. The petitions are six; the first three relate more expressly to God and his honour, the last three to our own concerns, both temporal and spiritual. This prayer teaches us to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and that all other things shall be added. After the things of God's glory, kingdom, and will, we pray for the needful supports and comforts of this present life. Every word here has a lesson in it. We ask for bread; that teaches us sobriety and temperance: and we ask only for bread; not for what we do not need. We ask for our bread; that teaches us honesty and industry: we do not ask for the bread of others, nor the bread of deceit, Pr 20:17; nor the bread of idleness, Pr 31:27, but the bread honestly gotten. We ask for our daily bread; which teaches us constantly to depend upon Divine Providence. We beg of God to give it us; not sell it us, nor lend it us, but give it. The greatest of men must be beholden to the mercy of God for their daily bread. We pray, Give it to us. This teaches us a compassion for the poor. Also that we ought to pray with our families. We pray that God would give it us this day; which teaches us to renew the desires of our souls toward God, as the wants of our bodies are renewed. As the day comes we must pray to our heavenly Father, and reckon we could as well go a day without food, as without prayer. We are taught to hate and dread sin while we hope for mercy, to distrust ourselves, to rely on the providence and grace of God to keep us from it, to be prepared to resist the tempter, and not to become tempters of others. Here is a promise, If you forgive, your heavenly Father will also forgive. We must forgive, as we hope to be forgiven. Those who desire to find mercy with God, must show mercy to their brethren. Christ came into the world as the great Peace-maker, not only to reconcile us to God, but one to another.

From the Matthew Henrys concise commentry .

If you have followed my questions you know i am going over old ground .

I just wondered , what do you think of this commentry ?

Is it correct ?

Is the lords pray to be spoken in parrot fashion or is it just a basic guide ?

What do you think the lords pray means ?Can you comment on the lords pray , what does it mean , what does it mean to you?
Assalaamu Aleikum... peace be with you.

i think that this is the best commentary that i have ever read on the Lord's Prayer... it is written by someone who has done deep introspection on this holy prayer... thank you for posting it. it is 'food' for thought and for meditation and i will come back and read it many times.

Praise the LORD!

as far as going over old ground... i appreciate the honesty and intensity of your posts... may the LORD continue to bless you and guide you... and forgive us all... insha'Allah.

thank you for the fellowship (Psalm 133)...

a reading from Psalms.

For the LORD has chosen Zion;

He has desired it for His dwelling place:

"This is My resting place forever;

Here I will dwell, for I have desired it.

I will abundantly bless her provision;

I will satisfy her poor with bread.

I will also clothe her priests with salvation,

And her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

There I will make the horn of David grow;

I will prepare a lamp for My Anointed.

His enemies I will clothe with shame,

But upon Himself His crown shall flourish." - Psalm 132:13-18

oh our LORD is an Awesome God.

oh... Alhamdulillah! Praise the LORD!

i find much correlation between the Lord's Prayer and Al-Fatiha...

they harmonize the Christian and Islamic Faiths... through the Holy Book(s)... insha'Allah

i believe that if one truly understands the Lord's Prayer... you will understand Christianity... and if one truly understands the Prayer Al-Fatiha... you will understand Islam... (insha'Allah... i have heard it said that this prayer contains the entire Qur'an and is 7 verses long.)

however, these thoughts that i am expressing are not spoken lightly... and it may take years of deep prayer to fully understand them... they are profound beyond words... and they speak directly to the heart... if said with sincere intent. Allahu a'lam... Almighty God knows Best. (Psalm 135:13)

i would like to join you in saying the Our Father...

"Our Father... in heaven... Hallowed be Your (holy) name.

Your kingdom come, Your will be done. (submission and surrender)

On earth as it is in heaven. (as above... so below)

Give us this day our daily bread (reliance on the beneficence of God)

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors (asking for clemency requires being merciful to others)

And do not lead us into temptation (show us the Straight Path) but deliver us from the evil one. (those who rebel against God)

For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. (Creation belongs to our Beloved Creator)

"Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we wear?'

"For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. Matthew 6:31-33

Praise be to God.

SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo!
The Lord's prayer is comforting to know.

One of my little children asked me what Angels say and I recited the Lord's prayer.Can you comment on the lords pray , what does it mean , what does it mean to you?
I think this was Christs' affirmation of His mission to lead us back to the Father. Cut out the middle men, there ain't no god but GOD.
...you've answered your own question(s) with what you've just posted...Can you comment on the lords pray , what does it mean , what does it mean to you?
The lords prayer is meant as guide. To recite it parrot fashion without giving any thought to it would be meaningless (as would simply reciting prayers that other people have written) Jehovah wants prayers from the heart.

There are so many things we can learn from the lord's prayer but the most important is that Jehovah's name is of primary importance. It is listed first, then the kingdom (Jehovah's means of fulfilling his purpose with mankind) and then lastly our own needs showing our reliance on our heavenly Father for all things.
Millions pray the "Lord's Prayer" daily without really getting the real sense of it. Since Jesus himself taught this prayer its contents must be extremely important to Christians.

But "the god of this world" Satan the Devil "has blinded the eyes of the unbelievers that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ might not shine through" [2Cor 4.4]

The Model Prayer has seven petitions. The first three ask that God act with regard to the sanctification of his name; the remaining four are requests involving human needs.

The first three is of great importance because the Bible story revolves around these.

"Hallowed be thy name" (Let your name be sanctified-NW)

God's holy name was slandered by the Devil (literally, slanderer) and His right to rule questioned by Satan (lit. opposer). The account is recorded in Genesis chap 3 and the first 2 chapters of the book of Job.

Since Satan raised moral issues against God and His sovereignty it is only fitting that Christians pray for God's name to be sanctified or made holy.

“Let your name be sanctified” includes the thought that God take action to sanctify himself by clearing away from his memorial name, Jehovah, the reproach that has been heaped on it ever since the rebellion of the first human pair in the garden of Eden. (Ps. 135:13; Hos. 12:5)

In answer to this prayer, God will remove wickedness from the earth. Concerning that time, we read: “And I shall certainly magnify myself and sanctify myself and make myself known before the eyes of many nations; and they will have to know that I am Jehovah.”—Ezek. 38:23; also 36:23.

"Let your kingdom come."

The Kingdom is God’s heavenly government, the agency through which real security and full enjoyment of life will be made possible for mankind. It is already established in heaven, and its King, Christ Jesus, anointed by Jehovah God himself, will soon rule over all the earth. Being a powerful government, the Kingdom will act against the imperfect and oppressive systems that now exist. “It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms [the present political powers], and it itself will stand to times indefinite.”—Daniel 2:44; 7:13, 14.

"Let your will take place, as in heaven, also upon earth."

God’s will is that all wickedness be cleaned out of the universe. “Just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more,” the Bible says. God has a special purpose for this planet. “You will be with me in Paradise,” Jesus told a person impaled with him, thus giving the man hope of life on a paradise earth. God’s purpose includes a resurrection of the dead, “of both the righteous and the unrighteous.” His will is that “all sorts of men should be saved.”—Psalm 37:10; Luke 23:43; Acts 24:15; 1?Timothy 2:3, 4.
