My Matsui oven is now practically prehistoric: nearly 20 years old by my reckoning. Used daily for porridge-making (! - sorry purists!) %26amp; still works well, although the door is getting annoyingly stiff to open. Am I dangerously irradiating myself every time I press the 'start' button?? Should I ditch it and buy a cheap 'n' cheerful new one??How long does a microwave oven last?
i have seen a few of these. my ex has one which must be
about the same. that one is hardly ever used so it
is in quite good nick still.
my honest advice to u would be to get a decent one
that has a power output of about 800W.
u might be irradiating urself and i feel it is
probably an unnecessary risk 4u.
i only say that as friendly advice. it really depends on it's condition.
but it is better to be safe than sorry.
it has yet to be proven that micro waves can
cause cancers and such like.
in reality as long as u stay a safe distance and don't
watch the wheel turning like some blokes do the
washing machine u should be ok.
why do blokes do that????
I've gone through 3 modern microwaves in a few years, if yours still works I'd be tempted to keep it, but I'd get it leak checked once in a while, trouble with modern M/Waves like a lot of things, the more things a gadget has, the more there is to go wrong! How long does a microwave oven last?
Our microwave oven, Panasonic Convection Oven, was 24 years old and it stopped working 3 weeks ago. We used this daily, and were totally lost when it did break. It stopped heating. I went out and bought another Panasonic, so far we do love it. I bought a Radiation Test Strip Card at an Appliance store many years ago and and I checked our microwave for any radiation leaks, just as I checked the new one. The test strips are under $10.00. I think that you will be happy with the purchase of a new one, the price of them has dropped drastically the last few years. No doubt yours is a large one, as most of the older ones were. Ours was a 2.2 cu ft., the one we bought is a 1.6 cu ft., but so far it is working out good, only problem you might find is that if it is a built in, you kinda have to redesign that wall. Best of luck in Microwave shopping.
I would buy a new one. Especially if you are having doubts...
Do you have any side effects? Like hair loss...? ;-)
Only joking. But I would definitely buy a new one. You can get a cheap one from Tesco's for example. We bought one for 30 quid about 4 years ago and it's still working.
(Maybe it's too long, too... I don't know...)How long does a microwave oven last?
Matsui is not a known name to me for microwave ovens.
My Sharp is about 17 years old. Went down about 2 months ago, I was able to revive it with a replacement fuse.
It appears safe enough since you can muster enough brain cells to put together this question.
But, one last test:
If you don't glow in the dark -- Safe.
You make porridge daily, I warm coffee daily -- about 3 times.
We don't use them very often -- minutes, not hours, daily.
There is no reason they cannot last quite a while.
Therefore, unless they are clashing with other appliances --wood-grain, instead of white/black, etc. there is no reason to put it out to the electronic pasture.
They are rather inexpensive -- likely less than you paid for this one, with probably many more features -- so if it should even sneeze, replace it.
btw: Make sure you door is sealing as it should -- the hinge might just need lubrication.
If its still working i would carry on, they dont make things to last these days.
Lubricate the door. Microwaves are made not to radiate.... for example, look at the grid in the door, that wire mesh represents a dead short to microwaves.
Here is a Microwave Tester....

Only a fiver.....
Ask Santa for a new one!
I would stick with the oven you have. Ours is nearly 15 years old and still works a treat, although it looks a little tired. Do not feel pressurised into trading up to a better model. Help to save the planet by sticking with old faithful. It is highly unlikely that you are irradiating yourself, as all ovens are built to strict guidelines.
Have a good microwaveable Christmas.
yeah! i think u shud.. maybe the new ones have less harmful radiation!!!
I think its time the old feller was put to rest. Get yourself a modern one with a grill as well - really useful.
My old Sharp one was donkies years old, and my most recent one (good old Dixons for producing cheap and cheerful Matsui) was about seven years old. I have just moved house so I bought a nice new posh one but only because the lining was coming away in my Matsui one. Unfortunately (and I work for an electrical retailer) electrical goods can last six months or twenty years. Its down to luck mostly rather than brand or cost.
